Mistfall Hunter Breakaway Cooldown: What Is Actually Known

No cooldown figure has been published for Breakaway, and there cannot be a fixed one: the timer shortens as you deal and take damage. Here is the mechanic, why any exact number you have been quoted is invented, and the talents that interact with it.

Short answer

There is no published number, and a fixed one would be wrong anyway: Breakaway runs on an internal cooldown that shortens the more damage you deal and take. Any page quoting you an exact figure in seconds has made it up.

Where this is being asked · Constantly, and usually as "break free" — which is why it is hard to find an answer. The mechanic is called Breakaway in game.

Evidence

The answer, broken into claims

A grade describes sourcing, not truth. Inferred means we concluded it and the reasoning is shown; unverified means someone asserted it and nobody stands behind it.

  • CorroboratedBreakaway triggers after two instances of impact damage in quick succession, breaks stagger, and ignores unit collision on the way out.

Consistent across launch-build guides and in-game tooltip captures.

  • CorroboratedThe cooldown is internal and shortens as you deal and take damage.

Stated in the launch-build beginner guide; no source contradicts it.

  • InferredNo fixed cooldown figure can be correct.

Follows from the rule above: a timer that varies with damage dealt and taken cannot have one true value in seconds.

  • UnverifiedAny specific Breakaway cooldown quoted in seconds.

Bellring Games has published no tuning values and no tooltip exposes them. A number here is invented.

  • OfficialDodges under the Mercenary talents Leap Step, Dynamic Charge and Relentless Advance no longer grant invincibility frames, and their Energy consumption is increased.

Bellring Games, 28 August Server Maintenance Update. The 3 September pass fixed those same dodges being interrupted in Super Armor and states the frames are not restored.

  • OfficialShadowstrix’s Lightweight failing to grant invincibility frames when triggered by a dodge was a bug, and was fixed.

Bellring Games, August 19 Live Update, filed under fixes rather than balance.

  • OfficialAn unmodified dodge grants a brief window of invincibility frames. No duration is published.

Bellring Games, DevNote #9 (24 September 2026), in its explanation of damage prediction errors. Until that post every published i-frame line named a talent, and this claim was listed as unknown rather than as a no.

  • OfficialA dodge can be rolled back by upstream latency: the client plays it immediately, and the server rejects it if it has already registered a hit when the command arrives.

§01

The mechanic, and the name people search for

Almost everyone searching for this types "break free", because that is what the action does rather than what it is called. Breakaway is the game’s answer to being stun-locked, and every class has it. After you take two instances of impact damage in quick succession a gold icon flashes, and a dodge pressed in that window performs a Breakaway: it breaks you out of stagger and ignores collision with other units on the way out.

  • It is the only escape once you are already staggered, which makes it the third pillar of combat alongside the dodge and the block.
  • It does not come out of the dodge resource — the cost is the cooldown, not the bar.
  • Players who never learn it lose fights they had already won, because being stun-locked here means dying with a full bag.
§02

Why there is no number to give you

The cooldown is dynamic. It shortens as you deal and take damage, which means the interval between two Breakaways in a drawn-out trio fight is not the interval between two in a quiet corridor. A single figure could only ever describe one of those situations, so quoting one would be less accurate than saying what the rule is. Bellring Games has not published the tuning values, and no tooltip exposes them.

§03

What interacts with it

The parts that are documented are the talents and skills built around Breakaway, and they are worth knowing precisely because you cannot plan around a fixed timer. These are the interactions captured from in-game tooltips and launch-build creator guides rather than inferred.

  • Withered Knight — Breakthrough Charge: performing a Breakaway raises the charge level by one for a short duration, turning a purely defensive escape into the next dash.
  • Seer — Emergency Aid: returns curse mana after a Breakaway, converting the escape you were pressing anyway into resource generation.
  • Mercenary — the hammer kit runs into a two-hit Breakaway limit, which is what punishes greedy chains.
§04

Breakaway is not “a dodge with invincibility frames”

These are two different mechanics and conflating them is what makes players report a bug. A plain dodge does carry invincibility frames — DevNote #9 (24 September) calls it “a brief window” and publishes no duration — but the server, not your screen, decides whether you were inside it. So “I dodged and still took the hit” almost always describes one of four documented situations rather than a fault.

  • Latency rolled the dodge back. DevNote #9 explains it directly: your client plays the dodge the moment you press it, but the command still has to travel to the server, and if the server has already registered the hit by the time it arrives, the dodge is rejected and you are pulled back into it. This is the most common version of the complaint, and the performance page covers the rest of that post.
  • You were already staggered, and a dodge does not break a hit in progress — Breakaway does, and only inside the gold-icon window after two instances of impact damage. Pressing dodge before the prompt appears spends charges on inputs the stagger is eating, which is what being “stun-locked” actually feels like.
  • You are a Mercenary running Leap Step, Dynamic Charge or Relentless Advance. Dodges under those three talents stopped granting invincibility frames on 28 August and cost more Energy — a deliberate change, not a bug. The 3 September pass then stopped those dodges being interrupted while in Super Armor, which is a different fix and does not give the frames back.
  • You were a Shadowstrix on Lightweight before 19 August, when triggering that talent with a dodge genuinely failed to grant invincibility frames. That one was a bug and it is fixed.

Expiry condition

What would have to change for this answer to be wrong

An answer about a live-service game without this is an answer with a hidden expiry date.

Bellring Games publishes tuning values, or a tooltip starts exposing the remaining cooldown. Until one of those happens, the rule is the answer and the number does not exist.

Every source, with its date

A complaint posted before 30 July 2026 describes the playtest, not the game you bought. Those are flagged rather than quietly mixed in.

  • The Breakaway trigger condition, the gold icon window, the stagger break and collision bypass, and that the cooldown is internal and shortens as you deal and take damage.

  • The Breakthrough Charge tooltip text, including that a Breakaway raises its charge level by one for a short duration.

  • That no patch note or DevNote publishes a Breakaway cooldown value.

  • That Shadowstrix’s Lightweight failing to grant invincibility frames when triggered by a dodge was a bug, listed among that post’s fixes.

  • That dodges under the Mercenary talents Leap Step, Dynamic Charge and Relentless Advance no longer grant invincibility frames and cost more Energy — a deliberate removal, described in the post as a class balance adjustment.

  • That a dodge carries a brief window of invincibility frames, that hit registration is decided on the server, and that a dodge command can be rejected and rolled back when upstream latency delivers it after the server has registered a hit.
